Common Material

A look into the Wellington Biennial event and the merch created and curated by Yu Mei.

Merch that can sit alongside some of New Zealand's most significant fashion labels: Yu Mei, JPALM, Kowtow and Twenty Seven Names.

So how does that look in practice →

We won’t lie, it can be an intimidating task creating garments for fashion designers. Not to generalise, but they often have a pretty particular way of doing things…mind you, we welcome the challenge.

Jessie Wong, Yu Mei’s founder, approached us wanting to create a custom merchandise suite that would be worn, distributed and gifted as part of their event; Common Material.

A merch suite that belongs.

It might seem "simple" or "minimal", but branding garments in a way that allows them to promote but also blend in; well that indeed is a fine art. One we're proud to claim.

It's all about the application – make sure it's up to snuff. Simple as that.

Whether it was the embroidered caps, the screen printed tees or the metallic print on the Yu Mei bags (bags in which you really didn't want to make any mistakes on), the precise application of brand is what made this merch suite really work.

Jessie Wong of
Yu Mei says…

"Such a great team to work with and an immense thank you for the support.

The t-shirts, hats, socks and totes they produced were worn by volunteers and VIPs, gifted to press from Vogue to i-D, and sold through the gift shop, giving the brand a presence that carried well beyond the weekend itself."
